Ali lay in bed listening to the sound of her master’s car as he drove off to work. Soon she would have to get up and start on the housework, but she could afford a lie-in first. There wasn’t much to do today, although he would expect the place in pristine condition when he returned tonight.

Years had passed, and she was now just three months short of her thirtieth birthday. You couldn’t tell that from looking at her: you might put her age as being early twenties. Her body was firm, trim, supple, athletic and tanned, and she was very fit. Since most of the decisions in her life were taken for her, the everyday stresses that age most people had not affected her.

Her life of slavery was nearing an end: in just three months time she would be freed. It was a lovely thought in some ways, although freedom was something she only dimly remembered. Still, to never be beaten again, to be able to dress as she chose - in fact, to be able to dress at all- and to be able to do what she wanted, even go where she wanted ... it would be wonderful. On the other hand, it was frightening in other ways: where would she go, what would she do? Fortunately, the organisation would support and help her come to terms with her new life. Her years of forced slavery had earned her that much.

She had one more month under contract to her current master, then she would be returned to the manor for her last two months, where she would serve as the maid, although she would still be a slave and therefore available to anyone who wanted her. During that two months she would receive counselling to cushion the shock of transition to freedom. On her last visit there a few weeks ago, Master Ralph, now in charge of slave welfare and procurement, had a long chat with her. She was not regarded as a security risk, and so would be free to go where she wanted as long as she did not “spill the beans” about the organisation. She had no intention of doing so: she knew well by now that they had sufficient friends in high places to stifle any problems, and also that she would risk abduction or assassination, not to mention public humiliation and notoriety if the full story were ever known. If she co-operated, she would be free and financially very well off.

Her abduction had been covered by a faked death, so she could not return to her parents; but, having had no contact with them for over ten years in which her experiences had changed her so much, she was not really bothered. However, she was consequently quite without contacts in the outside world. She had decided to use this to her advantage by travelling, to see the world for a few years, then eventually maybe look for a husband, settle down and have her sterilisation reversed.
